A local charity shop has launched its latest project in a bid to minimise landfill waste.
The 1-World Charity Shops in Logan, Beenleigh, Browns Plains and Underwood, work collectively to “spread joy and make a difference, one donation at a time”.
The shops’ proceeds are donated to local charities.
In their latest effort, 1-World have launched their upcycled U4B Range, consisting of a range of products – including bags, rugs and pet beds – made from entirely recycled materials.
The stores are also offering a clothing repair service.
Underwood store manager Ella Schwark said the staff and volunteers were very excited about the launch.
“Our stores are all about raising funds to assist those in need and we strive to make sure all donations we receive from the community are utilised to their fullest potential to minimise landfill waste,” Ms Schwark
“Any clothing donations we receive that we can’t rehome in our stores are then sent off to be upcycled into these exciting products.”
“We also have a rewards system for people who bring donations in store to us.”
Head of textile partnerships and innovation for Upcycle4Better Roxane Uzureau, said U4B range had multiple benefits.
“Number one I think it really educates people on the value of materials,” Ms Uzureau said.
“Materials have been finding a new purpose in a different product or form which shows it was not the end for that material.
“It also means they can decide to use a resource that is already there.”
She said the U4B range gave people an “unconscious educational journey”, empowering them to overcome the “saturation” of fast fashion.
1-World has saved over 5,000,000 kilograms of clothing and textiles from landfill since 2016, with another 5,000,000 plus kilograms of assorted household goods.
