United we stand for Reconciliation Week

National Reconciliation weeks starts on Sunday 27 May, and in Logan, First Nations residents are helping the local council support the important day.

Reconciliation is an opportunity to learn about the shared histories, culture and achievements of First Nations people.

This year, the artworks of local Indigenous artist, Jessica Skeen-McKinnon, are being used to wrap one of Logan City Council’s vans used in events to demonstrate its support of reconciliation.

Ms Skeen-McKinnon is one of the artists who contributed to the designs featured at Logan Gardens water play area.

A variety of events and activities are available to the community to mark the occasion.

Locals Nana Magic, and Tilly and Friends, will entertain audiences with their dancing and singing during two, free, under 8’s Reconciliation Week shows.

The shows are from 10am to 11am on Wednesday 31 May at Logan Central Library, and 11am to noon on Friday 2 June at Logan West Library.

The Logan Art Gallery is currently showing artworks produced by members of the CapeYork Peninsula community of Hopevale.

There will be four exhibitions at the gallery until Saturday 10 June.

The To the Light (Wulungurr-Bi) exhibition will feature paintings and textiles under the Hopevale Collective banner, as well as pieces designed by QUT fashion students.

Logan mayor, Darren Power, said the aim of National Reconciliation Week was to encourage people to speak up for reconciliation.

“We acknowledge Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the first peoples of Australia,” Cr Power said.

“We recognise the past and are working together to be one community.”
