Glut of pineapples hits local shelves

NOT all supermarket product prices are going through the roof.

According to rural producers and authorities, there’s a glut of pineapples on local shelves that people should be relishing.

Agriculture minister Mark Furner says they’re the tastiest pineapples in the world.

A big call, but a bumper crop this year in the least has led to an oversupply which means prices are down and quality is high.

There is a serious risk tonnes of the delicious fruit will go to waste, Mr Furner said.

“Our farmers support thousands of good jobs and work tirelessly to grow the world’s best produce and it would be a terrible shame to see those efforts going to waste,” Mr Furner said.

“Eating produce like delicious pineapples is part of Queensland’s great lifestyle that you can enjoy guilt-free every day.

“I’m calling on every Queenslander to add Queensland pineapples to their shopping list, whether it’s at the supermarket, the farmers market or your local fruit and vegetable shop.

“This is about Queenslanders backing Queenslanders, and you get some great-tasting Queensland fruit to enjoy as well.

Growcom chief executive officer Rachel Chambers said “pineapples are one of those delicious fruit that we don’t always consider for our trolley”.

“If you haven’t bought one lately, do yourself a favour. They’re sweet, juicy, and serve a double purpose as they can be used as décor in your home!

“Need a boost in the new year? Place a pair of sunnies on a Queensland pineapple and pop it in your kitchen. Instant mood lifter!”

Growcom will host a major public event in Queens Park, Brisbane City, from 6am on Friday, February 3 to help connect CBD workers and visitors with the great taste of Queensland pineapples.

Mr Furner said growing conditions for Queensland farmers had been favourable across much of the state, even with some regions impacted by recent weather events.

“Queensland farmers have done incredibly well and are on track to top $23 billion gross value of production for the second year in a row, supporting hundreds of thousands of good jobs,” he said.
