Better healthcare, closer to home

Since becoming a Dad, I’ve come to really appreciate how much a quality healthcare system matters.

You never quite know what’s going to happen when you have kids, but when an accident does happen or they get sick, you know you need quality care, close to home.

We all know how important healthcare is and now with the Australian-first Satellite Hospitals program, it will be easier to get the care we need, right where we need it.

Construction work has now begun on the Palaszczuk Government’s latest Satellite Hospital at Eight Mile Plains with a ground-breaking ceremony at the Levington Road site, signally that soon we’ll have a brand new facility, especially for our community.

The Satellite Hospital will offer a range of services tailored to suit local needs including treatments like wound care, chemotherapy and renal dialysis, saving locals from having to travel to the Princess Alexandra.

Critically though, it means we will free up hospital emergency departments, including at Logan Hospital, for the most serious cases.

In addition, the Logan Hospital Expansion Project is well underway and will increase our local capacity with:

  • a vertical expansion of the building housing Queensland’s second busiest emergency department, including four new floors;
  • a new maternity service;
  • a new eight-level car park; and
  • refurbishment of existing clinical and support areas in other buildings.

Take a fresh look at Daisy Hill these holidays

In our community we are spoiled for choice when it comes to idyllic locations to get amongst nature and enjoy our great lifestyle. A lifestyle our government works hard to protect.

“Flying Cloud”, “Bees Knees”, “Bronze Wing” are the memorable names that have been added to the list of already iconic local mountain bike trails, like “Jumping Ant” and “Possum Box”, at Daisy Hill Conservation Park.

As a community  we have worked to deliver even more mountain bike trail upgrades that are once again getting rave reviews.

Most recently opened was Jim’s Trail, which was named after local legend and park volunteer Jim Napier.

I know many families are feeling the pinch these holidays, but this is one place in our community with something for the whole family to enjoy, and it’s completely free!

The vision and direction of the Daisy Hill Action Plan was crafted by local stakeholders following extensive planning that considered conservation, recreation, tourism opportunities and amenity in the local community.

I would like to thank the group for their time, their commitment to our community, and for delivering on the Daisy Hill Action Plan.

Australia’s first Hydrogen Centre of Excellence

Queensland’s future workforce will be primed to help transform Queensland into a global hydrogen superpower, with the opening of Australia’s first Hydrogen Centre of Excellence, here in our community.

It’s one of four renewable and hydrogen training centres committed being delivered by the Palaszczuk Government, which will see apprentices and trainees graduating with skills to meet the needs of our future energy system.

Together, we are writing a new chapter in our proud resources and export history.

Over the last year, nine governments worldwide have adopted a hydrogen strategy, meaning there’s now 26 governments that have committed to adopt hydrogen as a clean energy vector in their energy system.

Which is why it is so important that Queensland and Australia get the policy, skills and training settings right for hydrogen, right now.

We recently announced our $62 billion Queensland Energy and Jobs Plan which will drive our renewable energy transformation.

This includes developing our hydrogen industry which is expected to create 4,350 jobs by 2040.

The centre in Beenleigh will support more good job opportunities in Queensland’s growing hydrogen sector.

The new facility will leverage partnerships to help supercharge the hydrogen industry in Queensland by delivering a skilled workforce and demonstrates how working together with industry, unions and government, we can deliver a world-class workforce in Queensland.

It was a privilege to join the Premier and many of my colleagues at the opening of Australia’s first Hydrogen Centre of Excellence here in Logan.

Making a difference in someone’s Christmas

Over the last 6 weeks, so many generous locals have joined me once again to dig deep to put together Christmas hampers for local charitable organisations – Logan East Community Neighbourhood Centre (LECNA), Youth Family Services (YFS) and Uniting Care.

The generosity shown by locals in our community is an inspiration!

So, a huge Christmas thank you to everyone who took the time to drop in to see me and donate items – whether it be food, toys, books, Christmas wrapping or even cash, which we used to buy everything from sweets for kids to essentials for parents.

These donations help to make Christmas special, even in circumstances where things are tight, so thanks again for your support of our local Christmas Hamper Collections.

Wishing everyone a very merry Christmas and a safe and happy New Year.
