An extraordinary year for Logan

This has been an extraordinary year here in Logan.

Our community has weathered many challenges, from the Omicron wave to flash flooding, but we have come together more strongly each time.

2022 was also a year of celebration for two of our long-standing community institutions.

Woodridge State High School celebrated 50 years of educating students, which was commemorated with a Gala Ball.

I had the pleasure of attending the event and it was wonderful to hear so many wonderful reminisces.

This year marks 10 years of the Braking the Cycle Project.

More than 180 local young people have learned to drive and gained the keys to their independence through this volunteer program, organised by PCYC Queensland and locally through PCYC clubs at Crestmead and Logan Central.

It was wonderful to host amazing volunteer mentor drivers and program graduates at a celebration event at Queensland Parliament last week.

Logan businesses have also led from the front this year, helping drive our economic recovery from Covid-19.

Our local economy is growing strongly, including a record reduction in the unemployment rate.

These achievements have been recognised with several awards.

Imaging Solutions, a great local health technology company, won the International Health category at the Queensland Premier’s Export Awards.

At the Logan Business Distinction Awards, it was great to see local businesses in and around the Woodridge Electorate like Snapfresh at Crestmead, Devon Pixies at Kingston, Marsden State High School, and the YMCA Vocation School at Kingston take home prizes.

Congratulations to the Logan Chamber of Commerce for organizing this important annual event, and to all finalists on their success.

At an elite level, Logan athletes shone at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

Congratulations to local Logan representatives Kurt Thomson (Wheelchair basketball), Alysia Lefau-Fakosilea (Rugby sevens), Taneille Crase (Athletics), Ebony Gorincu (Weightlighting), Jack Yu and Angela Yu (Badminton).

This year, we also saw the outstanding success of the Woodridge State High Year 10 Boys Volleyball team.

The team won the Southeast Queensland Metropolitan Finals, the Queensland Schools Cup Division 1 Gold, the Australian Volleyball School Cup Championship, and Logan Sports Team of the Year.

The Woodridge Electorate Office will be closed for the Christmas between 24 December 2022 and 02 January 2023, inclusive.

My staff and I would like to wish all readers and residents a safe and happy Christmas. We wish you all the very best for 2023.
