Opinion – LNP scraps homes Queenslanders can afford

By Member for Woodridge Cameron Dick

David Crisafulli and his LNP Government have decided that the way to deal with a
housing crisis and cost of living crisis is to scrap the construction of social and
affordable housing.

It is an extraordinary action to take and is yet further proof that the Crisafulli
Government governs for itself, and not in the interests of everyday Queenslanders.

David Crisafulli and his Deputy, Jarrod Bleijie, are cutting affordable housing when
the cost of housing continues to grow.

Jarrod Bleijie has already cancelled 115 homes including 41 affordable homes in
Noosa and Redlands and is letting plans for another 2945 homes, including 650
affordable homes gather dusk on his desk.

David Crisafulli and Jarrod Bleijie have made it clear that they will not stop until every
requirement that delivers affordable housing for Queenslanders is stripped away.

This stands in stark contrast to what Labor had planned.

Under Labor 276 proposals had been put forward under the streamlined State
Facilitated Development pathway that would have unlocked the delivery of over
30,000 homes.

And a minimum 15 per cent of those homes would have been affordable homes.

Before Labor left office, eleven projects had been approved, to deliver 4885 homes,
including 1321 affordable homes.

That’s an average of 27 per cent, well above the 15 per cent affordable home
requirement the then government had stipulated.

But all that potential is gone now under David Crisafulli’s LNP Government.

As well as not approving a single new project out of the 276 proposals put forward,
the LNP government has axed to approved projects wiping out 115 homes, including
41 affordable homes.

Another three projects remain stalled, holding up more than 3000 homes including
622 affordable homes on the Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast.

David Crisaulli loves an announcement but he’s short on action, including delivering
more affordable homes.
