We need swimming lessons for adults

There’s no doubt swimming is a quintessential part of living in Australia. But for some residents in Logan, language barriers or cultural differences can make participating is this Aussie pastime difficult. We want to see Logan residents get involved in the local community and go swimming whether it’s at the local pool or beach. Getting involved in sports is a great way to build stronger, healthier communities.

This is why the Morrison Government is delivering $644,000 to Logan City Council to establish a dedicated swimming program for adults from migrant and indigenous backgrounds. The reason why we’re focusing on these communities, you ask?

Well we all know of the fantastic learn to swim programs for kids but are there similar programs for adults? The surprising answer to that question is no! There are no dedicated adult learn to swim programs in Logan.

That’s why this program will home in on adults and ensure all Australians can participate in sport and physical activity, no matter their background. The program will be led by qualified bi-lingual swim instructors from the Aqua English Project, many of whom were migrants themselves. They now can help other migrants boost their swimming skills, grow confidence and become active members of our community.

The benefits of this program are many. We can improve their swimming skills, boost their English language skills, grow their confidence in the water and improve water safety in our waterways. A similar program for Logan residents from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities will begin next year to provide culturally appropriate swimming lessons for those communities.

That’s what it’s all about. Working together across multiple levels of government to build stronger, healthier communities. I will always be a supporter of the City of Logan and work with my colleagues to deliver for our great city.
