Rail trail feedback under microscope

Logan City Council says more than 700 people have given feedback ahead of the design stage for a Bethania to Logan Village rail trail.

However, that number includes both prompted and unprompted responses.

More than 100 are believed to be from Palm Lake retirement villages at Bethania and Waterford, who have asked that the trail be diverted around the two properties, rather than between them.

The rail line dissects the two resorts, in which residents share facilities and fear access granted via the rail trail would be a prompt for crime.

A six-week community consultation period for the 10km trail ended mid-October, and council is collating data from online and in-person surveys.

There was no mention of a petition from the Palm Lake residents.

“State MP Shannon Fentiman, council officers and I have spent considerable time listening to a range of ideas and suggestions, as well as concerns,” Cr Laurie Koranski said.

“When we have a draft design, we’ll engage with the community and there will be further opportunities to provide feedback before construction starts in 2024.”

The $7 million project is jointly funded by Logan City Council and the Queensland Government.

The trail will be located on the Bethania to Beaudesert railway corridor, which has been vacant public land since trains stopped using the line in the 1990s.
