It is no secret that we are a city that thrives on sport. We love cheering on our sporting heroes.
The calibre of nominations received for this year’s City of Logan Sports Awards held on Saturday night is testament to the city’s sporting pedigree.
Not only are the sports awards an opportunity to celebrate our local sporting stars, but they also support grassroots sport in the City of Logan to help inspire our next generation of champions.
As a council we are committed to supporting our grassroots sport and that is why it was an important feature of this year’s budget.
First the first time ever Council allocated $38 million over five years for local sporting facilities in this year’s budget. The Sport and Recreation Facilities Program will focus on grassroots sport. I’m hugely passionate about this commitment. It will mean new or upgraded clubhouses, changing rooms and toilets, car parks, fields and courts for our many dedicated sporting clubs in the city.
Our grassroots sporting organisations are part of our city’s fabric. They play a vital role in building connections and making our city a fun and healthy place to live.
We want to deliver facilities and programs that make us competitive and proud like the recent redeveloped Jodie Henry Pool at the Logan North Aquatic Centre.
So many of those grassroot clubs are run by volunteers – these are the amazing people who provide the foundations for the vital role sport plays in our community.
Week in, week out – they are there guiding, coaching, playing and simply turning up to create opportunities and helping turn dreams into reality for our budding young sport stars.
Without this dedication and passion community sport wouldn’t exist.
There were many deserving winners on the night, and it was a privilege to celebrate the achievements of our sporting community.
