Calls for expansion of successful domestic violence intervention program

The “success” of a domestic violence intervention program in Logan has prompted calls for an expansion.

The program, run by local community services organisation YFS, was established to assist men who have used violence or controlling behaviours in relationships to understand the impact of their actions and foster positive, respectful relationships.

A Griffith University evaluation of the Responsible Men’s Behaviour Intervention program found it was associated with “marked improvements” across several areas.

These included men’s understanding of domestic and family violence, improved self-regulation and communication skills.

As a result of the program’s women’s advocacy support, many women reported a greater sense of safety, control and empowerment.

“Our Responsible Men program is evidence that real change is possible when men have the opportunity to explore the beliefs that drive their abusive behaviour, reflect on the impact of their behaviour and choose non-violent alternative behaviours,” YFS’ client service manager Sarah Vuzem said.

Around 260 men were part of the program in the 2023-24 financial year alone.

According to the Griffith evaluation, 44% of the 650 men referred to the program started it.

Only 44% of those who started the program completed it, with some reporting sustained improvements up to six months later.

Men who had stable housing, who were self-referred to the program and in a relationship with the aggrieved, were more likely to complete the program.

Their partners and ex-partners also reported changes, including greater understanding of what constitutes DV and its impact on family, improved self-regulation and calmer family interactions.

Over 22 weeks, participants were encouraged to take ownership of their actions, understand how to communicate non-violently, and develop healthier attitudes towards relationships through “trauma-informed, respectful sessions”.

YFS claims the program’s impact in Logan “is clear”, but is needed elsewhere.

“Expanding this program to Scenic Rim will allow us to open opportunities for more men in what is a rapidly growing area, who want to take responsibility for their actions,” Ms Vuzem said.

YFS CEO Christopher John said expansion was an opportunity for the new state government to “show their commitment to addressing domestic violence”.

“Expanding the Responsible Men program to this region would demonstrate a proactive approach to making lasting change for families who currently lack access to these vital specialists services,” he said.

“Every day, we see men taking steps toward change and accountability, and that has a profound effect on their families.

“Through a safe, respectful environment, we help participants recognise the impact of their behaviour and move towards respectful relationships.”
