Yarrabilba’s hub of opportunity

A $7.4 million community hub is to be built at Yarrabilba.

The hub, on Basalt Drive between the Yarrabilba State Secondary College and San Damiano College, will host community events, courses and activities for young people and adults.

The project is a collaboration between public and private sectors, with Brisbane Catholic Education and Lendlease both contributing to funding of the project.

Lendlease’s head of communities Ian Murray said the new community hub would become the permanent home to ‘The Exchange’, offering free services to local job-seekers and employers.

Brisbane Catholic Education executive director Pam Betts said the facility would provide good opportunities for young people.

“Location is key with these centres and given this one is strategically positioned between two secondary schools, a dedicated youth space will be an important part of the service,” Logan City councillor Laurie Koranski said.

Housing minister Leeanne Enoch said Yarrabilba – expected to have 50,000 people when completed – is a priority development area.

“The Yarrabilba Community Hub will be an important piece of social infrastructure for this growing region, that will help build community and employment connections, support start-ups, create jobs, and support the local economy,” she said.

“This multi-sector approach demonstrates how working together more innovatively can deliver real benefits.”

Logan MP Linus Power said the hub would provide services that support community well-being and the development of new skills.

“We want the young people of Yarrabilba to tap into the world of opportunities that are coming our way, with Brisbane hosting the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and our focus on becoming a renewables and hydrogen superpower,” he said.

Construction is expected to be completed mid next year.

“This new community hub is one part of a community facilities network which will help meet the growing demand for services and spaces in Yarrabilba,” Cr Koranski said.

“It will be an inclusive, engaging and responsive place that enables a thriving community to connect, learn, earn and innovate.

“It will also provide important community services that offer guidance and support for people in need.”
