Wing flies into big partnerships

Wing, based in Logan and Australia’s first on-demand drone delivery service, is partnering with some big brands in an effort to expand its delivery reach.

In the last fortnight, the Google-backed business has been finger-lickin’ good to lovers of chicken in a one-day trial of drone-delivered secret herbs and spices.

The KFC trial was available on Friday to a small number of households in Kingston, Logan Central, Slacks Creek, Underwood, and Woodridge.

It’s planned that the service will gradually expand to include other nearby locations.

Customers simply download the Wing delivery app from the App Store or Google Play, enter their address, and submit their order. Food is prepared at the Wing delivery site, in a ‘cloud’ kitchen developed especially for the drone project.

Free delivery then takes minutes.

Wing has also launched a partnership with Roll’d Vietnamese.

Food for that project is prepared in Roll’d kitchens and shipped out by drone.

With efficient delivery within minutes, orders can be placed via the Wing app and delivered by a remotely piloted custom drone to customers within a 10km radius of the delivery site.

“Given the last 18 months, Australians have relied on delivery more and more, so it’s great to be making life easier for fans who want to get their hands on KFC (and Roll’d) in a flash,” a Wing representative said.

Fun facts:

  • Drone technology could replace 2.3 billion Australian vehicle kms each year by 2030
  • Drone delivery projected to grow retail sales in Australia by $2.2 billion by 2030
  • Delivery costs for takeaway could fall by up to 80-90%
  • Drones could improve delivery efficiencies by over 60-70%
