Logan Metro Football Club have been crowned champions of the Brisbane’s second tier soccer competition, and the only Logan soccer team to take home major silverware this year.
The 3-0 win over North Pine is a major confidence booster for the team ahead of next season, as they look to earn a promotion to the Brisbane Premier League.
Metro hoisted the League 1 championship cup to an army of excited fans at Perry Park. The noise coming out of the ground, one of Brisbane’s premier football destinations with a capacity of 5000, will stick with captain Jean-Mike Jabo.
“Honestly, we couldn’t have done this without the supporters, coming out giving us the energy we need and having our back, we love you guys,” he said from the dressing room post game.
Head coach Luis Melgar said it was a great win after a nervous lead up.
“Everyone was nervous, but when we started playing our football, we were in control,” he said.
Besides the glory of winning the trophy, the season did go entirely to plan.
Metro was eyeing off a promotion to the Brisbane Premier League heading into the season. For this, they needed to finish first or second in the regular season but fell just short in fourth place.
“A grand final win is huge, and while the goal for the season was promotion, it was a great platform to showcase our team on the big stage, playing at Perry Park, the home of football in Brisbane, we had a massive crowd come along to watch us,” Metro co-founder Sam Escobar said.
“It really sets us up well with momentum heading into the next season.”
They were on track early in the season until the Covid break snapped their momentum, compounded by the departure of their main goalkeeper.
The grand final was a game of fast plays, smooth passing, and slick footwork that proved too good for their opponent.
The first two goals came in the first half thanks to a fast and low strike by man of the match Ango Kbread and one from Maha Salat, who entertained the crowed with Christiano Ronaldo’s signature mid-air pirouette celebration. Captain Jean-Mike Jabo scored the third in the second half in a slick one-two combination before polishing an open shot on goal.
