It took weeks for Mayor Darren Power to show his face as part of a flood recovery promotion and when he does it’s to welcome the ADF and hail their role in “saving the day”.
I for one am grateful that the ADF arrived but Mr Power, while you are hailing those 20 paid employees, there have been volunteers working from before the floods peaked.
They’ve been filling sandbags, finding ways to deliver care packages, save people and animals from life-threatening situations, and after the floods receded, to get dirty in the massive clean-up efforts.
The ADF have come to assist the council in doing their job of cleaning up the kerbsides. That’s great.

Remember though, they’re getting paid.
Darren Power you are also getting paid to take photos with them.
But what of those who are doing this for their love of their community? Where is the love and respect for the hundreds of unpaid volunteers who dragged, carried, pushed – through houses, yards and up driveways those extremely heavy, flood sodden mattresses, destroyed fridges, water damaged cabinets etc. Mr Mayor, do you think those destroyed items all walked themselves up to the street?
Do you think people’s floors water blasted themselves?
Do you think shovels magically filled wheelbarrows full of heavy, malodorous mud without human hands? You must be living in Fantasia!
And aside from thanking the general volunteers, where is the gratitude towards Louie Naumovski and the Logan House Fire Support Network who have taken charge and organised weeks of volunteer efforts?

That has been the base of operations and has the Mayor shown up once? One guess.
Some of us have been at this since the flood warnings first came and we’ve not seen the mayor at all except in the media (which means there will be a small handful of residents that have spotted him).

Is there even a spot of mud on his dress pants?
