We’ll be cheering on athletes, and those who helped make them great

THE Commonwealth Games may not gain as much traction as the Olympics, but the coming week is a time for Logan to stand tall.

We are usually well represented by athletes who hail from Logan’s grass roots sporting programs.

Council deserves credit where it’s due, and the most recent budget rightly put a focus on the development of sporting facilities with a commitment of money over the next few years.

We know that sporting clubs are about much more than “sport”. The more talented children will grow through the ranks and will be given opportunities to represent their region, state and country.

But clubs are about people. They are places where families gather, meet, discuss life issues, and resolve problems.

In the case of Logan Metro FC and others, they are places for families to seed friendship, and in some cases refuge and assistance.

Our clubs, like our schools and other places of gathering, are where we develop our community’s set of values – which stay with us all as we grow into other areas of our working and family lives.

That makes them critical to our cultural eco-system. This week, we’ll be cheering on our athletes, and those who helped make them great.
