We all want to see our city thrive

The local government election is behind us, but counting continues.

I’ve heard the concerns from residents about how poorly election day was run – with long queues, ballot paper shortages and some polling places closing early.

I have raised these concerns with the attorney-general and I am glad to see that an independent review has been called so we can understand how and why things went wrong.

At the time of writing this column, Divisions 4 and 5 were still to be declared by the Electoral Commission Queensland (ECQ).

The latest numbers indicate that Nathan St Ledger is in a strong lead in Division 4 and Paul Jackson is comfortably ahead in Division 5.

These new councillors bring valuable life experience to their roles.

I know they are just as focused on helping their community and the broader city as I am, and are chomping at the bit to start working for you.

Every councillor who ran again was returned to office which is an endorsement on their hard work and commitment to the city.

These councillors were part of a great team in the past and I know they are all united and focused to deliver on what the community wants going forward.

Despite the elections, they continued to work hard. They were out in the community, making sure that the core business of running the city continued during this transition to a new council.

Having a united group of councillors focused on what our community needs is more important than ever with the challenges that we are facing as a city this term.

Together, they have the perfect blend of experience, creativity and drive to create a brighter future for Logan.

The first item on the agenda after we are sworn in is to appoint a deputy mayor and committee chairs.

These roles are chosen by councillors, and once they’re appointed we can get to work on the budget and start delivering on our commitments and vision for the city.

We all love Logan and want to see it thrive. As your mayor, I’ll be working towards that everyday.
