Watch: man arrested after allegedly meeting with undercover police posing as child

A local man who allegedly met with an undercover officer posing as a child has been charged.

Police allege the man, a 35-year-old from Buccan, used a social media platform in an attempt to “procure a child for sexual acts”.

He allegedly organised to meet with the child – who police say was actually an undercover “operative” – at Browns Plains, where he was then arrested.

Police did not specify when this was.

However, police did say officers raided the man’s home on 12 August, where they seized electronic devices that “will be subject to further examination”.

“The 35-year-old Buccan man has been charged with one count of using internet to procure child under 16,” a police statement read.

“He was released on strict bail conditions and is due to appear at the Beenleigh Magistrates Court on 10 September.”

Detective acting inspector Cameron Burke said the arrest highlighted the risk posed to children by online predators.

“It’s important that parents and caregivers are aware of what apps, settings and platforms their children are using, and actively supervise their online activity,” Mr Burke said.

“Our number one priority is ensuring the safety of children, if you encounter suspicious or inappropriate behaviour towards a child online, we urge you to report it immediately.

“Argos investigators are committed to targeting those offenders involved in the sexual exploitation of children and the possession or distribution of child exploitation material and will use all available resources to detect and apprehend those who seek to exploit children in our community.”
