On average, one Queensland woman per week is killed by her partner or former partner.
Across Australia, one in four women have experienced physical and/or sexual violence from a current or previous intimate partner.
Last week I attended a candelight vigil in Logan that was convened by The Centre for Women & Co to remember victims of domestic and family violence.
In April alone they received 258 referrals. The rates of violence against women are simply unacceptable. As a community it is imperative we send a clear message that domestic and family violence will not be tolerated.Â
This year’s Federal Budget is focussed on ending domestic violence.
We’re committed to removing barriers to women leaving abusive homes and have allocated $164.8 million for Escaping Violence Payments to provide up to $1500 in immediate cash, and a further $3500 in-kind for goods or direct payments of things like bonds and school fees.
Family and domestic violence is one of the leading causes of homelessness for women, so we are also extending the Safe Places program so that women and children escaping violence can renovate, build or purchase emergency accommodation.Â
Changing behaviour of perpetrators is key part of anti-violence programs so we are funding a trial program focussed on deterrence. In addition, we are providing more money to existing services such as the No To Violence Men’s Referral Service and MensLine Australia’s – Changing for Good program.
If you are a man who believes your behaviour is causing a problem for those you love, the Men’s Referral Service phone number is 1300 766 491.
