By Mayor Jon Raven
Did you see the headlines in the news last week, where experts and leaders were calling for the entire South East Queensland region to be rebranded as Brisbane for the 2032 Olympic Games?
Apparently they want to take advantage of the global opportunity at hand with a united brand.
But if they really want to rename all of South East Queensland – I reckon it should be called Greater Logan.
Why? Well, when you name something, you name it after the middle. You don’t name it after the edges.
We are the beating heart of SEQ, you can’t move people or products throughout the region without coming through our city.
Brisbane 2032 organising committee president Andrew Liveris said “when we promote one another, we win as one”, and I think that would still be true if we named it after Logan.
More people move from Brisbane to Logan than any other city. They left for a reason, and I don’t think they’re keen on Brisbane following them here.
Referring to other parts of South East Queensland as Greater Logan isn’t new for me – I’ve been doing that since I was elected Mayor.
I’ve also been working on building Logan’s reputation – which is something many people told me they wanted during the election.
You want to improve how we are perceived.
If you live here, you love it, but those outside the area often talk us down.
That means wherever I go I am talking up Logan.
Our people are our greatest asset – we have so much great good, amazing businesses and welcoming neighbourhoods.
We’re already the fastest-growing part of Queensland. People are voting with their feet by moving here in droves.
We’re not just in the perfect location, but we’re also affordable compared to other cities around us.
It’s great to raise a family here.
Renaming the region to Greater Logan could have significant economic benefits.
A single, strong brand can attract investment, tourism, and business opportunities, boosting the local economy and creating jobs.
And if we can’t name the entire region Logan, then we’re fine to stand proudly on our own and embrace everything that makes us unique.
