The men who saved Logan rugby

Four months ago, it looked like Logan City would be without a rugby team.

The combination of COVID and a turnover of players hit their numbers badly.

“The club was in a bad way and only had one team,” newly elected club president Jack Pahiva said.

“Logan City Rugby would have been gone.”

But then, a club miracle happened. A group of old boys who stopped playing at the club years ago heard about the struggles and reunited to save it.

Today, Mr Pahiva is proud to announce they are thriving and have a fresh new look to ring in a new era of Logan City Rugby.

Enter the Logan Saints.

“It was called Logan City Rugby Club, now it’s just going to be called Logan Saints,” Mr Pahiva said.

The Saints’ new identity was inspired by an overseas rugby tour some old Logan City players used to do. While overseas, they met a French club from New Caledonia, which had the Saints name in it. At the time, they were interested in having a sibling club in Australia. All these years later, the new Logan rugby club committee revived those ties to create the Logan Saints.

“We want to kickstart Logan Rugby again, and we wanted to start fresh with a clean slate, so we launched our new logo, new jerseys,” Mr Pahiva said.

Geographically, it makes sense for Logan to have a rugby team, with so many players from the area filling team rosters outside of Logan.

Now the Saints are establishing themselves, the number of other community groups hiring its facilities has grown significantly and is putting life back into their home ground at Slacks Creek. The money from that has helped them pay off old club bills they inherited.

“We’re quite lucky to get some money coming through the club, because when we came in we incurred a lot of the old bills,” he said.

“We actually paid our first council bill off for the water rates, so now we are eligible to get grants, so that’s a big achievement for the guys.”

The club will host a community celebration in December as a thanks for all the support they have received in starting up again.
