Tai Chi group blows first candle

Members of Eagleby Tai Chi and Qigong will next month be celebrating the group’s first anniversary.

Self-described as promoting health, balance, and community spirit in Logan, the group meets every Wednesday, from 9.30am at the Eagleby Community Hall on Cowper Avenue.

Club founder John Garnsworthy said the sessions had quickly become a cherished local fixture, with participants drawn by the promise of “gentle physical vitality” and “mental clarity” offered by the traditional Chinese practices of Tai Chi and Qigong.

“The friendships and happiness I see in class are truly inspiring,” he said.

Mr Garnsworthy’s martial arts journey began in the late 1960s. He holds black belts in both Shotokan Karate and Moon Lee Tae Kwon Do, and has experience in Wing Chun Kung Fu.

He said his Tai Chi practice spanned decades and was shaped by long-term training with grandmaster Henry Sue and master Sifu Chujin Wu, the latter of which is “widely regarded as one of the foremost Tai Chi masters teaching in the western world”.
