Students boost to kickstart university dreams

Six students about to embark on their university journeys have been given a helping hand.

Local businesses and Logan council will gift $5000 to each school leaver over three years to help with the costs of their educations.

The recipients include:

  • Jake Ferrari, who is studying a Bachelor of Business/Bachelor of Mathematics at QUT. He wants to pursue a career as an accountant, banker or financial advisor.
  • Mikayla Leo, currently enrolled in a Bachelor of Medical Imaging at QUT, hoping to work in the medical imaging field in hospitals.

  • Kamila Ahmed, a future GP with dreams of making the world a better place, will be studying a Bachelor of Pharmacy at QUT.

  • Melissa Bayer, who wants to work in regional and rural Australian towns as a registered nurse, will study a Bachelor of Nursing at University of Queensland.

  • Emma Mulgrew, a speech pathology student also at QUT wanting to be self-employed when she is qualified.

  • Anita Vinis, a Bachelor of Business/Bachelor of Mathematics student at QUT who also hopes to start her own business.

Mayor Jon Raven said the bursaries would help these local students pay for textbooks and technology while they found their feet at university.

“Young people never forget who helped them at the start of their careers,” Mayor Raven said.

“My Chief of Staff received one of these tertiary educational bursaries when Pam Parker was Mayor.

“This helped her kick start her career in journalism and, after working for a former Prime Minister, she’s now serving the City of Logan in the Office of the Mayor helping people every day.”
