Sporting clubs big winners in budget

Logan sporting clubs were a big winner in this year’s council budget.

The budget allocated $38 million over the next five years, and then ongoing funding after that, for a Sport and Recreation Facilities Program which has a focus on grassroots facilities.

The program will prioritise the efficient delivery of new or upgraded clubhouses, amenities, playing fields, courts and lighting, with each project prioritised according to community need.

It could also support the installation of site infrastructure such as driveways, carparks and signage.

As part of council’s commitment to be an ‘active city’, the program will provide greater oversight of the planning and approvals phases of each project, including the publication of site plans and program of works.

Building for a brighter sporting tomorrow follows goals already kicked in the City of Logan’s sporting arena.

These include:

 The recent opening of the $14 million Cronulla Park Indoor Sports Centre at Slacks Creek which features a premier training facility for gymnasts

 The soon-to-be-opened $9 million Olympic-size ‘Jodie Henry’ swimming pool at Logan North Aquatic Centre at Underwood

Mayor Darren Power said council was determined to promote healthy and active lifestyles while ensuring that every City of Logan resident – no matter what their goals – is equipped to succeed.

“It is no secret we have incredible sporting potential in our city, and this budget fires the starting gun on an even more active and agile future,” Councillor Power said.

“We have a long and proud reputation for producing champions across many sports and we again call for Logan to be allocated a venue for the 2032 Olympics.”

Council will also invest in the City of Logan’s active and healthy future through the development of new community infrastructure, including a major upgrade to Alexander Clark Park in Loganholme.

The budget allocates $6.34 million over two years on the first three stages of the newly adopted Alexander Clark Park Masterplan.
