Skye Nicolson falls short in title defence

Meadowbrook’s Skye Nicolson has fallen short in her WBC world featherweight title defence, losing to American Tiara Brown in a closely contested split decision in Sydney on 22 March.

Miss Nicolson, 29, entered the bout with confidence, having successfully defended her title twice since claiming it in April last year.

However, despite a strong start, the Queensland boxer struggled to find her rhythm against the aggressive approach of Brown.

The fight went the full ten rounds, with judges scoring it 96-94, 94-96, and 97-93 in favour of the American challenger, handing Miss Nicolson her first professional defeat.

Nicolson admitted she felt “a bit flat” during the fight and acknowledged that Brown executed her game plan effectively.

“I definitely didn’t feel myself in there,” she said.

“I struggled to get into my rhythm and flow and probably fought her fight a little too much.”

Despite the loss, she remained positive about her future in the sport and said she would aim for another shot at the title.

“It was a close fight, and I thought it could have gone either way,” Miss Nicolson said.

“You can’t take away from Tiara’s performance, this is her moment, and I’ll come again.”
