Shopping centre to become town centre

A $220 million proposal would see the Greenbank Shopping Centre increase by seven-times its current size.

The current single-level centre spans 3970sqm, anchored by a Wooworths and 17 specialty stores.

It is located along Teviot Road, in a rapidly-growing area between the Covella and Everleigh estates.

The centre’s owner, Region Group, last year proposed an expansion that would see the centre reach 28,000sqm.

Region Group said it wanted the development to be the town centre.

“The proposed redevelopment will address growing demand by creating a vibrant town centre,” the Region Group website says.

“The centre’s main trade area is already exceeding growth expectations and is forecast to experience a population explosion over the next 10 years.

“The expansion of Greenbank Shopping Centre will support the fast-growing population, while creating additional employment opportunities for the region.

“The centre is… in an ideal location next to exciting future developments including a new library and community facility, health hub, new school and train station.

The proposal would use vacant land to the west of the existing centre along Pub Lane to expand.

It also would include an additional full line supermarket, multiple additional retail tenancies, additional parking and a large format discount department store.

“This will meet growing food and grocery needs and improve choice and convenience for locals,” Region Group said.

“A series of activities to update and refresh the existing centre such as upgrades to the building façade, and improvements to landscaping, parking and other amenities will also be performed.”

The upgrades will include enhanced access to public transport, children’s play areas, an outdoor spaceand ampitheatre, a library, swim school, outdoor dining are dubbed ‘Eat Street’, and a park.

All this is expected to be complete by late 2026.

Region Group said it was seeking development approval from Economic Development Queensland.

But a spokesperson for EDQ said it had not received any Development Applications in relation to the Greenbank Shopping Centre during 2024.
