Serving up for Beenleigh

Queensland’s first free supermarket, Serving Our People, has expanded with a third location in Beenleigh, aiming to provide essential support to those facing financial hardship.

The initiative, which allows individuals to collect 15 free items per week, has already seen significant demand across its existing stores on the Gold Coast.

Founder Yas Matbouly said the concept was designed to remove financial barriers for people experiencing food insecurity.

“The whole idea when we started the People’s Market was to help people struggling with food insecurity,” Mr Matbouly said.

“When somebody’s facing financial difficulties, they don’t need discounts, they need access. That’s why everything you see is free.”

The Beenleigh store stocks a range of necessities, including fresh fruit and vegetables, frozen meals, meat, household items, and non-perishables.

Open every Thursday from 9am to 3pm, the store may extend its hours based on demand.

The service has already attracted more than 5,000 individuals each week across its locations, with plans underway to open another store on the Gold Coast.

Logan Mayor Jon Raven praised the initiative, particularly in light of the recent cyclone that have left many residents struggling.

“This is an amazing opportunity for people who’ve experienced impacts from the cyclone to be able to come out and get the things they need the most,” Cr Raven said.

The charity’s first free supermarket, launched in Mermaid Beach in 2023.

Serving Our People encourages community involvement, with opportunities for donations and volunteering available through its website.
