Service station awning collapses after truck crash

The awning of a service station at Beenleigh has come falling down after it was hit by a truck.

The destroyed canopy now rests on the ground, crushing the once popular petrol pumps and rendering the servo out of action.

Authorities say the incident, which involved a B-double truck hitting the structure, occurred at about 6.30pm on the corner of Logan Street and City Road.

Beenleigh local Stu Robertson was only three cars behind the B-double just moments before the debacle unfolded.

“I saw the truck turning and I took an avoidance decision to steer away and went down another street,” he said.

“I thought, this is crazy. It looked like the truck was trying to do a right-hand-turn into the garage. The only way that could happen would be to completely block both streets. It’s just impossible to do it [otherwise].

“So instead of following the truck, I thought ‘stuff that’ and went down City Road instead.”

Queensland Fire Department spokesperson said three fire crews arrived on scene before it was left in the hands of police.

A Queensland Police Service spokesperson said the truck’s driver had since been interviewed by police and was helping with the investigation.

“Due to the extent of the damage at the scene, the driver of the truck met emergency services at a Stapylton service station shortly after,” the police spokesperson said.

“No injuries have been reported.”

She confirmed the accident caused “significant structural damage to the building”.

The servo, Pacific Fuel Solutions, is Mr Robertson’s go to station.

He said this incident was part of a broader trend at that intersection.

“They are forever having people cut through the servo to skip the lights, or they have people cross the double-white line to come through the servo.

“It was a rather poor choice of judgement given the size of the B-double – it’s like two semis.”

Police are also appealing to anyone with dashcam footage of the incident, and the moments leading up to the crash, to contact police.

Investigations are ongoing.
