Rockabilly revelry in Berrinba

It might feel like you’re in a 1950s diner, but in reality, you’re over at Cheryl Morgan and Shaun Pearson’s house in Berrinba for a party.

The couple transformed part of their massive shed into a retro-themed bar several years ago.

Ever since, they’ve held birthday parties and celebrations for up to 300 guests.

It’s one of their favourite features of the property, 5-7 Macquarie Way, which is where they have lived for almost three decades and where they raised their two children.

“I’ve been in this area since I was around 11 or 12, and I just haven’t really seen anything, so we’re gonna head up north,” Mr Pearson said.

Ms Morgan said they had both recently turned 60-years-old and retired.

“We’re looking into the future, and we need to downsize now,” she said.

The 6678sqm property boasts plenty of cleared space for parties, gardening, or for children to race around on motorbikes.

“They had a ball – mudslides down in the creek, motorbikes, everything,” Mr Pearson said.

“It’s a unique block at the end of a nature corridor, with a rainforest on it, a running creek through it, and no neighbours.”

The home itself offers four bedrooms, two bathrooms, and plenty of living space.

“We’ve got a big veranda out here – 11 metres by 10 metres – we just live out here in the summer,” Mr Pearson said.

“The house has got a sunken lounge with a 12- or 13-foot ceiling, and then it steps up to the kitchen and down to the back.”

Ms Morgan said one of the previous owners who built the home was a bricklayer.

“He did all the hard work,” she said.

“It was a quiet location when we bought, and it was acreage, and Sean saw the place being built – it took them eight years to build it.

“The entire house is double-brick, which is really good for both summer and winter – he went overboard.”

Mr Pearson said the builder did a great job.

“He did a lot of brick retaining here, there and everywhere,” he said.

“Places where you wouldn’t normal retain – around the pool and down near the shed.”

There is a pool, a pond, a greenhouse and two huge sheds – one 216sqm and the other 107sqm – perfect for cars and boats.

Plus, one of the sheds features a retro party bar.

“We did that ten years ago, the bar was shipped up from Altona in Victoria – it’s pretty cool,” Mr Pearson said.

“We’ve had more than 300 people here, and you wouldn’t have even known.”

“And there was room for more,” Ms Morgan added.
