In an age where genuine social connection can be hard to find, one local fishing club is proving sometimes all it takes is a shared love of the outdoors to build lasting friendships.
The Beenleigh-based club Dauth Park Fishing Club has become a meeting place for fishers of all ages and experience levels, offering regular fishing trips and social events that bring people together who have a shared passion for the outdoors.
Club vice president Esther Latz said the club’s mission was to people together through a shared love of recreational fishing.
“We strive to provide a welcoming environment where people of all ages and experience levels can enjoy fishing, develop their skills, build friendships and lead an active outdoor lifestyle,” Ms Latz said.
“Our club is built on friendship, respect and a passion for fishing.”
Whether someone has been fishing their whole life or is picking up a rod for the first time, the club aims to create an environment where everyone feels welcome.
Throughout the year, members take part in a variety of activities, including organised fishing trips, competitions and social gatherings, giving people plenty of opportunities to spend time outdoors while getting to know fellow members.
“Our club connects people through our monthly fishing competitions, weigh-ins and social events, where members enjoy a barbecue, refreshments and plenty of fishing stories,” Ms Latz said.
“One of the greatest strengths of our club is the willingness of experienced anglers to share their knowledge and encourage those who are new to fishing,” she said.
For many, the club provides more than just a hobby. It offers a chance to disconnect from busy schedules, spend time in nature and connect with people who share similar interests.
With a calendar full of coming events, organisers are looking forward to welcoming both returning members and newcomers.
“We hold 12 fishing competitions each year, fishing a variety of local waterways,” Ms Latz said.
“After each competition, we gather for our weigh-in, where members enjoy a barbecue and catch up on the weekend’s adventures.”
The club’s next event, the Monster Raffle, will be from 6pm on Saturday 22 August, followed by the August fishing competition from 28-30 August, with the weigh-in from 1pm on Sunday 30 August.

For adults and adolescents aged 16 and over, an annual membership is $20. Junior memberships, for those under 16, are free when accompanied by a paying adult member.
“Our annual general meeting and membership renewals are held each October, and we are always happy to welcome new members throughout the year,” Ms Latz said.
