Radio Lollipop to resume services at Logan Hospital

Radio Lollipop is resuming services at Logan Hospital for the first time since Covid-19 hit, and organisers are calling for “bubbly” locals to join their team of volunteers.

Radio Lollipop’s spokesperson Amira Aboukoura says the charity is seeking 14 volunteers across Tuesdays and Saturdays to provide care, comfort, play and entertainment to sick children in hospital.

“We are looking for anyone who wants to give back and create some positivity and light in these kids’ lives when they are going through a really dark time,” Ms Aboukoura said.

“We do what we call bedside visits, so when our volunteers go around to the wards, they are interacting in-person with the kids; playing games, doing crafts, activities and even just having a chat.

“We also have a playroom service at Logan, so the kids get the chance to come out of their room for a little bit and have some face-to-face interaction,” she said.

“They get needles, they get catheters, pokes and prods while they are in bed but Radio Lollipop really gives them that choice; whether they want to have a play or just have a chat.”

Radio Lollipop services have been restricted since the pandemic began in 2020 but are now allowed to visit the emergency department in Logan.

“Everyone seems really excited and keen for us to be back even if it’s not in our full services.

“Our radio show is broadcast live through the Queensland Children’s Hospital Radio Station and then they are accessed through the TV screens the kids all have in their rooms.

“It really gives the kids a chance to kind of be kids again in a situation where they don’t really get the opportunity.

“It’s a really incredible experience and you get to meet so many amazing people and at Lollipop our mission is to give kids a voice and a choice.”
