For 35 years, the Probus Club of Beenleigh has brought seniors together to socialise, connect and have fun.
Whether it’s through theatre shows, fine dining, or listening to guest speakers, club members know they’re up for an interesting time at their monthly meetings.
“We promote ourselves as a club of fun, friendship and fellowship,” president Rilla Evans said while on the way home from a club excursion to watch Jesus Christ Superstar in Brisbane.
“We meet for a lunch or outing once a month, we have coffee another day, and we have a quick meeting once a month.
“We try to get in interesting speakers that will increase people’s knowledge or entertain.”
For the most part, members are aged 70 and above, and include people with a wide range of experiences.
Several members are widows or widowers looking to “make other friendships”.
“We have three ladies in particular – I call them the three musketeers – they formed a really good friendship and do other things together,” Ms Evans said.
“It’s really just to get out of the house and socialise, which is good for everybody’s mental health.
“I don’t think we have too many members under the age of 70. We have one who is 96. She’s been in the club for a long time, and while she has dementia, she still comes along and enjoys the fellowship. She’s a bit of a character.”
The club was founded on 18 January 1990 by former president Ralph Bulled, initially intended as a fellowship group for retired and semi-retired professional and businessmen.
Later, the rules changed so women could join.
Nowadays, members meet at 10am on the first Tuesday of each month at Windaroo Lakes Golf Club.
