We’re a creative lot in the City of Logan.
If there’s one thing our diverse community does well it’s the arts.
Council proudly supports the many talented artists and musicians by providing grants and platforms to showcase this abundant creativity.
One of our finest is Kyra Mancktelow. The Crestmead artist has launched her first major solo exhibition at Logan Art Gallery.
Kyra is a Quandamooka woman with linkages to the Mardigan people of Cunnamulla and South Sea Islanders. Her creative and eye-catching artworks include prints, sculptures, ceramics, paintings and weavings.
Inspiration comes from her rich cultural knowledge and stories and traditions which draw in the audience to connect and reflect.
Kyra’s latest works Unsilenced depict how she and other First Nations people view the world through their distinct ways of life in relation to the land, the law and ceremony.
If you have wondered where else in the city you might have seen Kyra’s work – think big!
Her giant mural proudly adorns the Chester Park water reservoir on Middle Rd at Boronia Heights. The mural depicts the everyday ‘warriors’ who fight for justice and a better world.
Kyra’s latest exhibition is supported by the Regional Arts Development Fund and is on display at the gallery until July 24. The exhibition overlaps with NAIDOC Week from July 4 to 11.
To also mark NAIDOC Week, the gallery will feature Elders’ choice: highlights from the Logan Art Collection exhibition.
Representatives from the Logan District Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Corporation for Elders have curated a selection of local artworks.
And if it’s live music you’re after, be sure to catch two local choirs at our special event Arts in the Open on Saturday, June 19.
Live performances will be on the lawn outside the gallery and feature music by the Freedom Train and Mixed Beans choirs.
Cath Mundy and Jay Turner from the Mundy-Turner duo will also keep everyone entertained.
Be sure to bring a picnic blanket and low chairs and enjoy an afternoon of live music, while checking out the latest gallery exhibitions.
No need to go to Brisbane or the Gold Coast for your arts and culture fix – we have it all here in the City of Logan.
