More than 60 people have already given council something to think about ahead of a consultation period for the Bethania to Logan Village rail trail.
The trail, which follows a decommissioned rail line from Bethania to Beaudesert, has so far been a huge success.
But the Bethania link, which dissects two retirements villages, has struck discontent from elderly residents who fear for their safety.
They say there are alternatives, and they’re pleading with council and the state government to consider a diversion.
Design work rail trail is due to start in November, with construction planned for 2024.
A six-week consultation period opens tomorrow for six weeks.
But residents are worried it’s a token period despite 60 people taking a petition to council chambers earlier this month.
Councillor Laurie Koranski who has lobbied heavily for rail trail funding said council would assess many factors – with community feedback an important one.
“We want people to share their thoughts and ideas for how the trail might look,” Cr Koranski said.
“We also want people to let us know about anything else we need to think about such as safety, access points and other possible recreational opportunities along the trail.
“There is no idea too big or too small – we want to collaborate with those who will be using the trail and live near it to ensure we get the best outcomes for everyone.”
Palm Lake Resort residents at Bethania and Waterford are not happy with the plan to build the trail through their secure gated community.
“We put up a public petition to have the rail trail built around Palm Lake Resort, not through it,” resident Noeline Burton said.
“We are proposing the rail trail goes around the community down High Road and onto Easterly Street. Council is worried about the connectivity to Bethania train station, but it will still connect following that route.”
The residents’ petition has been accepted by council and has now gone to state.
“We actually had Shannon Fentiman, Laurie Koranski and someone from the Department of Transportation come out and walk the proposed trail through our property from fence-to-fence last week,” Ms Burton said.
“We pointed out that there was no internal fencing and how close it would run to people’s homes. There is also a heritage-listed bridge and a beautiful creek that is environmentally protected.
“We went out and took photos of the Logan Village to Yarrabilba rail trail. There is graffiti, rubbish, horse manure all over the path and damage to residents’ property. There is no policing especially at night and that makes us feel unsafe.”
