People power key to more funding

PEOPLE are being urged to put their weight behind a pre-federal election push for better infrastructure in the City of Logan.

Logan City Council has launched a “Stand up for Logan” campaign in an effort to draw pre-election pledges from major parties.

There are 16 projects on an ever-expanding wishlist that Logan City Council believes most require immediate funding.

Last week, deputy mayor Jon Raven pushed for $40 million to be committed to better telco infrastructure, including the elimination of blackspots in a modern suburban city.

Mayor Darren Power said council has set up a Facebook page where he feels people should stand up for their city.

“Making sure these projects become a reality is critical as the City of Logan’s population moves towards half a million people by 2041,” Councillor Power said.

“Whether it’s upgrades to our road network, the installation of new safety cameras, environmental programs or building essential community and leisure facilities, we know investment from all levels of government will help us to create a liveable city that is ready for tomorrow’s opportunities.

“I’m also advocating strongly for an Olympic venue in the city that can be repurposed for use in the years after the games in 2032.”

Cr Power said the views of voters were powerful in getting commitments from candidates.

“It’s fine for council to say this is what we need in Logan, but people power will really emphasise what matters most in the community,” he said.

Cr Power urged residents to visit and like the Stand up for Logan Facebook page to provide comments and generate ideas.

“We also have information about the 16 projects on council’s website so you can become more informed about what funding is needed and why it’s important for the city’s prosperity in the future,” he said.
