Opinion – Logan’s community centres shine bright

By Logan Mayor Jon Raven

Community centres are some of the most important places in Logan.

They’re where people go when they need a hand, want to meet others, or just need someone to talk to.

And this year, council has delivered another one, this time in one of our fastest growing suburbs, Flagstone.

The new $8 million centre will open soon, with not-for-profit community service provider Beaucare set to run it.

It’ll give locals a place to access services and programs close to home.

That’s the sort of practical community infrastructure growing suburbs need.

But this is bigger than just one new building.

Across Logan, we’ve got 16 other community centres doing great work every day.

They help people get support and feel connected to their community.

A lot of that work only happens because of volunteers.

With National Volunteer Week underway, it’s a good time to recognise the people who quietly give their time to help others.

They don’t do it for attention.

They just turn up and get on with it.

And our city is better for it.

If you’ve never been to your local community centre, this week’s a good chance to have a look and see what’s happening.

You might find something that helps you, or a way you can help someone else.

You can learn more about Logan’s community centres at logan.qld.gov.au.

And if you’ve been thinking about volunteering, now’s a great time to get involved.

Logan’s always been a city that looks after its own, and our community centres are a big part of that.
