By Logan mayor Jon Raven
We’re lucky to call Logan home. There’s no better place to live.
But the reality of living in south-east Queensland is that extreme weather is part of life.
Most years, we get a reminder of just how quickly conditions can change, whether it’s a hail storm, cyclone, flood or bushfire.
While we can’t stop these events from happening, we can take simple steps now to be better prepared when they do.
That’s why this week is important.
It’s Get Ready Week, so council’s disaster management team is out in the community helping people understand how to prepare for emergencies.
Getting ready doesn’t have to be complicated.
It starts with knowing the risks where you live and having a plan to help keep you and your family safe. Having an emergency kit packed and ready to go is also important, as is knowing where to find reliable information when you need it most.
And don’t forget your pets. Furbabies, hoofbabies and featherbabies are part of the family too.
This Saturday 10 October, our team will be at Petbarn Underwood from 9am-noon sharing practical tips on how to include pets in your emergency plans and kits.
Even if you don’t have a pet, drop in and learn more about getting ready for emergencies, the Logan Disaster Dashboard and the Logan Early Warning app.
The more prepared we are as households, the stronger our community will be when emergencies happen.
So take 30 minutes this week.
Check your emergency kit.
Talk with your family.
Make sure you know where to find trusted information.
A little preparation now can make a big difference later.
