New MP, Labor headed for victory in Logan City

Any doubts whether Logan was Labor Party heartland were swept away Saturday night.

Amid a national swing to the government, a run of four consecutive terms for LNP member for Forde Bert van Manen came to an end.

Although the result is not yet declared, it seems inevitable that Labor challenger Rowan Holzberger will gain the seat.

According to political pundits, it was a surprise result.

A week out from Saturday’s poll, bookmakers had Mr Holzberger a 7-1 shot to enact the 4% swing required to turn Forde.

Given the number of postal votes still to be returned, the Labor Party remained cautious on Monday, refusing to call the seat.

Mr Holzberger said he would not comment until he was officially declared an MP.

However, as of Monday morning, Australian Electoral Commission numbers had Mr Holzberger well ahead with 51.76% of more than 60% of votes already counted.

This included preferences.

It would take a flood of postals to influence the result.

Mr van Manen could not be reached for comment.

The city’s two other electorates were predictably and safely retained by the incumbent MPs.

In Rankin, federal treasurer Jim Chalmers has so far received a record 66.5% of the two-candidate-preferred vote – the highest in Rankin’s 40-year history.

In the first-preference count alone, Mr Chalmer’s won a 50.48% share of votes.

LNP challenger Paul Darwen recorded less than 20%.

Scott Buchholz, who has kept the seat of Wright in LNP hands for the last 15 years, has retained his seat with a convincing margin of 16,083 votes.

He did, however, record a swing of -1.98%, with Labor’s Pam McCreadie securing 41.09% of the electorate.
