Twenty-nine new social homes at Waterford West could help older tenants downsize without leaving their community — and free up bigger properties for families.
Treefern Villas was officially opened on Thursday 8 October by Housing Minister Sam O’Connor, following its delivery by Community Housing Limited in partnership with the Queensland Government.
Mr O’Connor said the villas would help residents remain independent as they grew older.
“Every one of these 29 homes means another Queenslander has a safe and secure place to call home,” he said.
“These are thoughtfully designed homes that will allow older Queenslanders to live independently and stay connected to their local community.
“Importantly, helping older tenants right-size into a home that better meets their needs can also free up larger social homes for families who need that extra space.”
Mr O’Connor said the development was part of a wider housing program across Logan.
“We’ve got 680 social and affordable homes underway across Logan and more than 7000 underway across Queensland as we continue to ramp up delivery,” he said.
Community Housing Limited Queensland state manager Carly Bairstow said the development was designed to support independence, security and long-term wellbeing.
“These villas have been purpose-designed and built for people seeking a right-sized home that supports them to age in place within their local community,” she said.
The development includes 18 one-bedroom and 11 two-bedroom homes, designed particularly for people aged over 55.
That includes existing social housing tenants looking for a smaller property that better suits their needs.
Ms Bairstow said moving could allow those tenants to stay close to familiar people, places and support services, while making larger homes available for families waiting for housing.
“By supporting people to move into homes that better suit their needs, we help free up larger social housing for families who are waiting,” Ms Bairstow said.
Each villa has an open-plan kitchen, dining and living area, a private patio and parking.
The single-level homes have step-free access and features aligned with the Australian Government Livable Housing Design Guidelines.
Public transport, healthcare, shops and other everyday services are nearby.
The Treefern name was inspired by Waterford West’s native plants with an unfurling fern representing a fresh start for residents.
