Logan City Council has created a new “thriving communities” committee to align with the city’s new 50-year vision.
Division 3 councillor Mindy Russell has been appointed chair of the newly created Thriving Community Committee, with Division 2 councillor Teresa Lane appointed deputy chair.
The new committee will help drive the city’s oversee some of the services residents use or notice every day, from libraries and local events to city safety, customer service, cultural programs and community infrastructure.
The committee has been established under the council’s revised structure following endorsement of Logan 2075, the city’s 50-year vision for how Logan will grow, change and thrive.
One of the five key themes for Logan 2075 is ‘thriving communities’, alongside city shape, mobility and infrastructure, economic transformation, natural areas and waste, water and energy.
Logan mayor Jon Raven said the new committee structure had been aligned with those long-term priorities.
“Now that we’ve endorsed Transform Logan, we’ve aligned the committees with our Logan 2075 themes so that every decision we make can work towards those long-term goals,” he said.
Under the council’s terms of reference, the committee will receive and consider reports before making recommendations to Ordinary Council.
Its portfolio covers sport and community infrastructure, community development, Transform Logan and advocacy, corporate communications, city safety and livability, library services, art galleries and creative industries, cultural services, customer service, venues and events.
That means the committee could influence practical issues such as how council supports local groups, manages community venues, improves library and cultural services, responds to livability concerns and plans events across the city.
Cr Russell was first elected in 2020 and previously managed The Family Place, a community-led family support program in Logan.
She said the new role would enable councillors to work together on city-wide community priorities.
“Working with local councillors on city-wide ideas and making sure Logan City is the most thriving city in Queensland is a real priority for your council team,” she said.
The committee’s first listed meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, June 10.
