Abortion accessibility was enhanced late last week with the state government introducing a bill to allow nurse practitioners and endorsed midwives to prescribe termination-of-pregnancy drugs for those in the early stages of pregnancy.
Previously, a person could only obtain a prescription for the drug from a registered medical practitioner.
Doctors will remain the only health practitioners authorised to perform surgical abortions and medical terminations for gestations nine weeks and above.
The law also changed references to ‘woman’ with ‘person’ to ensure everyone pregnant “can access termination of pregnancy care” and strengthen legal recognition of transgender and gender diverse Queenslanders.
