Despite commercial benefits, a train station would not be suitable for Beenleigh Town Square, according to Macalister MP Melissa McMahon.
Ms McMahon said she asked about the possibility of an underground station in the vicinity of town square, but was told “straight off the bat” that it was not a feasible option.
“Some significant commercial resumptions would be required, particularly for the proposed carpark and the accessibility for people travelling from north of George St,” Ms McMahon said.
“The bus transit centre link to the train station is also vital to encouraging people onto the heavy rail network. I would ultimately like to see the southeast busway link to the Beenleigh Transit hub, so ensuring a dedicated bus route that is not encumbered by CBD traffic is a key requirement.”
She said a new Beenleigh Train Station has the potential to encompass multiple types of transport.
“So I’d be interested to see what the commercial interest in a TOD would be for a western station versus nearer to where the current one is, as that would offset some of the cost,” she said.
