Skilled labour and trades shortages in manufacturing and construction industries is the focus of a new project developed by a Meadowbrook employment agency.
The Manufacturing Industry Cluster project has been co-designed with employers in the region to address specific local needs.
It also looks to fill current vacancies.
Delivered at DGT Meadowbrook, the four-week program which started last week is a combination of foundation skills and key industry specific training, followed by placement into on-the-job work experience.
DGT CEO Kris McCue said the federally-funded project will provide tailored training with real employment outcomes for local jobseekers.
“We’ve worked closely with established local employers and other stakeholders to make sure this program offers highly relevant skills training, with real, sustainable employment opportunities,” Mr McCue said.
Following the training, DGT will work with employers to place successful graduates into vacancies.
“The intended outcome of this training is employment, that’s why we’ve partnered with local employers to develop the program. They will have the opportunity to employ graduates, either through apprenticeships, or direct employment into full-time, part-time or casual roles.”
It’s anticipated more than 40 entry level vacancies will be available at the completion of the course.
A number of businesses have already signed up to be part of the project, and will be part of the selection and training process.
Merv Pratt from Afford A Home Group said he is excited to be part of this project.
“In this current environment skilled staff are hard to attract,” Mr Pratt said.
“Through this program we’ll have access to employees with the solid base-level technical skills who we will be able to further train and develop. It also allows us to incorporate skills development into our workforce.
“The fact that these new employees will be local to the area means they’ll have minimal travel time to work allowing for better work life balance and hopefully happier and more productive employees.”
