Man arrested after alleged car theft on M1 at Underwood

Police arrested a man in Southport on Wednesday after he allegedly stole a car at Underwood.

Police allege a black 2012 BMW X3 rear-ended a grey 2024 Kia Carnival while travelling north on the Pacific Motorway at Underwood at about 4am on 7 May.

Police allege the man in the BMW then stole the damaged Kia and drove south towards the Gold Coast.

Police tracked the BMW to Southport, where officers used a tyre deflation device on Olsen Avenue around 9.30am.

The driver allegedly abandoned the stolen Kia and ran from the scene on foot, police said.

Officers then tracked the man, who police allege was armed with a knife, to a nearby hospital, where he was arrested.

Police said no members of the public were threatened or physically injured during the incident.

Investigations are continuing.
