Logan’s first film festival returning with a diverse focus

Calling all film lovers – the Underdog Film Festival is back at the Kingston Butter Factory this month with a packed program of screenings, awards and a special industry panel.

The day will feature movies spanning a range of genres and categories.

Festival president Elijah Sanderson said the festival would focus on showcasing Logan’s diversity, telling stories from First Nations, LGBTQI+ and other minority perspectives.

“We’re about championing the people from the fringes, telling Australian stories and boosting up communities,” he said.

While Mr Sanderson said there was room for Logan’s film scene to become stronger, he said there were many strong filmmakers in the city.

“There are definitely strong young filmmakers based in Logan.

“One of the finalists this year… he’s got a movie called Disco Dolls and Chico Rolls that’s based in Logan. It’s like a retelling of a family feud that happened here a few decades ago.

“And we had a bunch of other filmmakers last year submit films that are based in Logan.”

Mr Sanderson said events like Underdog aimed to build a culture of filmmaking in Logan, and “capitalise” on the city’s positioning in Australia.

This year’s festival – the second ever – is expecting a crowd of around 400..

The day’s first screening session will kick off at 10am with films in the categories of: Best Multicultural, Best Animation Short, Best Documentary Short, The Underdog Award and Best Narrative Short.

From 2pm, filmmaker Lark Lee will host a panel titled Making Your First Feature Film: From Concept to Distribution, joined by Jane Larkin (The Edge), Mihir Chakrapani (Carnal Vessels) and Natalie Rose (Santa Hunters).

The second screening session is scheduled for 3pm, with films in the categories of: Best Made in Logan Short, Best Music Video, Best First Nations Short, Best LGBTQIA+ Short, Best Sports Short and Best Narrative Short.

This session will see the People’s Choice awarded.

Like last year, the festival will end with a VIP after party, from 7.30-10pm.

Tickets can be purhcased, started at $16 a person, via loganarts.com.au
