Logan City Council has urged locals to dispose of certain magic sand products that may contain asbestos.
Reports surfaced last week that several coloured sand products may be contaminated, prompting recalls from suppliers like Educational Colours, Creatistics and Kadink, and the closure of childcare centres in other parts of Australia.
Today, Logan City Council asked residents and businesses to safely dispose of certain play sands.
“Logan residents can dispose of household quantities of magic sand free of charge at Council’s Browns Plains Waste & Recycling Facility only,” a statement read.
“No other Logan City Council waste facilities are authorised to accept magic sand.
“Childcare centres, schools or commercial businesses needing to dispose of magic sand must call council to make disposal arrangements in advance.”
The council said the magic sand should not be placed in kerbside wheelie bins or with general waste.
“While early indications are that the risk of exposure is low, proper disposal of magic sand will minimise potential further exposures.”
The recalled products from Officeworks are labelled: Kadink Sand (1.3kg), Educational Colours – Rainbow Sand (1.3kg) and Creatistics – Coloured Sand (1kg).
KMart and Target have recalled products including a 14-piece Sand Castle Building Set (Batch no: 42975724), a Pink Magic Sand (Batch no: 42304371) Blue Magic Sand (Batch no: 42304364), and Green Magic Sand (Batch no: 432919650).
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission said the products were sold throughout the country between 2020 and 2025.
The products were recalled because they may contain tremolite asbestos, a naturally occurring asbestos, which was detected in some samples after laboratory testing.
“We have engaged with Officeworks who is a major supplier of these products and they advised that the products have been removed from sale. We expect they will take all the necessary steps to alert their customers,” ACCC deputy chair Catriona Lowe said.
“We continue to engage with suppliers and expect all to provide appropriate support to consumers including responding to queries, and providing advice about arranging a refund.
“We urge customers who own any of the products to stop using them immediately and place the sand in a heavy-duty plastic bag and double tape it securely and keep it out of reach of children.
“When doing so, in an abundance of caution, customers should take precautions such as a wearing disposable gloves and a mask.”
The ACCC will continue to monitor developments in relation to the products and the recall notice may be updated as new information emerges.
