With the storm season in full swing, the RSPCA are urging pet owners to take proactive steps to ensure their furry and feathered companions remain safe and calm during severe weather events.
Every year, hundreds of pets go missing due to the stress caused by storms, or other loud noises, making preparation essential.
The RSPCA said that it’s important to create a safe environment for pets during storms ‘where they feel comfortable’.
“For dogs, a pet crate or quiet room works well, while cats should be kept indoors,” a spokesperson said.
“Products like Adaptil or Feliway diffusers can help soothe anxious animals and engaging them in normal activities with treats or toys can provide comfort.”
In the likelihood of having to leave a property or house, pet owners should ensure that their pets are microchipped and have an emergency kit ready.
“Ensuring your pet has up-to-date identification, such as a microchip and a collar with tags, can significantly increase the chances of being reunited if they escape,” the spokesperson said.
“Emergency kits should include food and water, medications, vaccination records, and transportation equipment like carriers or leads.”
The RSPCA Queensland website offers a downloadable emergency plan checklist to assist pet owners.
If pets display signs of severe stress, such as trembling, excessive panting, or escape attempts, owners are encouraged to seek veterinary advice.
“If you know your pet has a noise phobia, or if their behaviour changes during storms, talk to your vet about medication options that might help.”
