When Kay Wecker started sewing and embroidery about 20 years ago, she wasn’t quite sure what she was getting herself into.
For one, it was the commitment to hone skills of intricacy and accuracy.
Then, it was the investment into machinery which cost the same as a good-sized car.
Kay has attended classes and workshops in order to ensure her skills are top shape, and aside from her commercial experience, she’s improved with practice by sewing for her family.
Kay’s Sewing was set up to recoup some of the money she spent over the years on quality equipment, but in retirement, it’s also a way to keep busy.
Her skills are finely tuned, and she believes people want fast turnaround.
“I find that people want and expect accuracy in spelling, and they want neat work of good quality,” she says.
Kay has computer skills which allow her to digitise her work, and consequently to replicate logos onto hats, shirts, towels and robes.
She says she has a good variety of fonts and colours to choose from, which provides customer satisfaction.
She also has a good eye for colour.
“With my sewing alterations I need accuracy in measuring to make a great looking garment look even more special by having the right length,” she says, speaking in particular about the alterations she does to trousers and jeans.
