Justine Sundry: More than enough

In business and leadership, inspiration comes from those who push past challenges, lift others up, and create opportunities for growth. In this Breaking Barriers Q&A, Justine Sundry, Executive Director of BNI Brisbane Southside, shares the women who inspire her most, the lessons she’d pass on to her younger self, and how breaking barriers is about more than just overcoming obstacles—it’s about building a strong, supportive community where everyone can thrive.

If your business or career were a story, what would the title of this chapter be and why?
Throughout my journey as a business owner, I’ve learned that success isn’t just about hard work – it’s about pushing past limitations, embracing opportunities, and surrounding yourself with people who inspire growth. At BNI Brisbane Southside, I am passionate about breaking barriers, not only in my own career but by encouraging others to do the same. I believe that business is more than just numbers and strategies; it’s about fostering connections, supporting others, and creating an environment where we all can thrive. I’ve seen firsthand how collaboration and shared knowledge can open doors that once seemed out of reach. By stepping outside my comfort zone, embracing challenges, and continually learning, I’ve built a business that not only grows but also helps others achieve their own success.

Which women Inspire you the most?
Life is full of wonderful and interesting people, and inspiration can be found everywhere. I admire the women who push forward despite obstacles, who embrace challenges with resilience and determination. They are the ones who turn setbacks into lessons, who lift others up as they rise, and who refuse to let circumstances define their potential. Whether in business, family life, or personal growth, they prove that strength is found not just in success, but in perseverance. These women remind me that courage isn’t the absence of fear but the decision to move forward anyway. Their stories – seen in everyday moments of leadership, kindness, and ambition – serve as a constant source of motivation. They inspire me to keep striving, to believe in possibilities, and to always rise stronger than before. The world is better because of these women, and I am grateful for their example and the inspiration they provide every day.

“One of the most powerful tools you will ever possess is belief in yourself.”

What would you tell your younger self if you could?
I often wonder if my younger self would have listened to the advice I’d give today. Hindsight tells me I was determined to prove I could do it all on my own, eager to show the world that I was capable. But if I had the chance to whisper words of wisdom to that version of me, I would say this: You have always been more than enough. Your worth is not defined by external validation, nor is your journey meant to follow anyone else’s path. Your purpose in life is yours alone to define and embrace. One of the most powerful tools you will ever possess is belief in yourself. It will carry you through challenges, fuel your ambitions, and remind you that anything is possible. We are all constantly learning, failing, and growing – evolution is part of the journey. There is no final destination where we suddenly “arrive” at perfection; rather, life is a continuous process of becoming. Beyond shaping our own lives, we also have the ability to uplift and inspire those around us. Every action, every word, and every moment of kindness can create ripples that extend far beyond what we see. So, choose to stay positive, believe in your potential, and never underestimate the power of lifting others as you rise. Chase your dreams with confidence, embrace the lessons that come with every stumble, and always remember – you are more capable than you realise.

How did you navigate challenges early in your career?
Early in my career, I faced many challenges, but what truly helped me navigate them was surrounding myself with other women who believed in me and encouraged me to keep going, even when I doubted myself. These women offered not only support but also pushed me to grow and reach beyond what I thought was possible. They reminded me that I wasn’t alone in facing these challenges and that there is power in sharing experiences and learning from one another. What I’ve learned is that growth often requires doing what scares us most.
