Housing the Labor project of our generation

By Rowan Holzberger

When I was elected, I told MyCity Logan that housing is my top priority.

I’m pleased to see the Albanese Labor Government putting housing front and centre. Because in Logan, it’s not just policy, it’s personal.

Logan is growing fast, but affordable housing is getting harder to find. That’s why the announcement this week to bring forward the expanded 5% deposit program for first home buyers to October 1 matters so much here.

Since the Albanese Government came to office, over 2000 people in Forde have used the current scheme. That shows how vital this is for our community.

The expanded 5% deposit program means a Logan family can buy an $800,000 home with a $40,000 deposit, shaving up to eight years off saving time and slashing about $34,000 in mortgage insurance. Instead of paying rent for eight years, that’s potentially $280,000 going toward your own home.

Housing is not just a personal issue- it’s an economic one. After WWII, Australia built a strong economy on affordable homes. But for decades, we’ve let housing fall behind. In Logan, rising rents and housing shortages are the result.

The Albanese Government is stepping up- with clear plans and real investment.

We’re working with the state and Logan Council to build more homes faster. Through the Housing Australia Future Fund, we’re delivering the biggest public housing construction in 30 years. That includes more than 200 new social and affordable homes already underway here in Forde – set aside for the people who need them most.

We’ve launched Help to Buy, helping people into homes by sharing the equity.

We’re cutting red tape, fixing broken planning systems, and supporting builders to get back on site.

We’re committed to 1.2 million new homes nationally- with 100,000 reserved for first home buyers.

As Federal Housing Minister Clare O’Neil said, housing is the “Labor project of our generation”

For Logan, it’s about giving families a fair go. Because a stable home is the foundation for everything else.
