Gardening has been a lifelong constant for Waterford West resident Marg, who spent many childhood days in her family garden with her father.
Children typically prefer play to work, but not Marg.
Gardening became her favourite hobby.
She said one of her most cherished memories was the smell of fresh lawn cuttings after her dad finished mowing.
Years on, Marg is now a member of the garden club at the retirement village where she lives.
The group has met every week for the last two years, providing the village’s garden some extra attention and revitalising the community in the process.
Not only does gardening bring joy to Marg and her neighbours, but according to the National Institute of Health, the activity improves their self-esteem, fulfilment and fitness.
Joining a gardening club has also been found to increase one’s sense of belonging and productivity.
“It’s so relaxing being out in the garden, but you also get to meet nice, friendly people and make new friends through the club, which is really important at my age,” Marg said.
Marg’s neighbour Jaqui, who is another founding member of the club, was taught everything she knows about gardening by her mother-in-law.
The retiree said looking after her own garden became an enjoyable experience she would share with her husband – with the most satisfying part of the process being when the carnations bloomed.
Jacqui said growing the perfect garden “comes down to love”.
“Nurture your garden, treat your garden with respect and thank it every single day,” she said.
The Garden Club members sell their homegrown plants at the Seasons markets.
